Tooth Extractions, Bone Grafts & What Comes Next

At Sway Dental & Facial Esthetics in West Caldwell and Cranford, NJ, tooth extractions and bone grafts work together to protect your oral health and preserve future options. When a tooth must be removed due to decay, infection, or periodontal disease, the surrounding bone begins to shrink. Pairing the extraction with a bone graft helps maintain bone structure, reduce complications, and streamline treatment.

Many patients receive extractions and grafts as part of a plan for dental implants, which, along with restorations like crowns or full-arch replacements, support bone and gum health while preventing further tooth loss. All procedures are performed in-house by Dr. Justin Kang using minimally invasive techniques and Bio PRF® for enhanced healing and comfort.

Tooth Extractions

Sway Dental offers both simple and surgical extractions. Simple extractions remove visible teeth, while surgical extractions address broken, impacted, or complex roots. Dr. Kang performs each with precision to minimize trauma and support faster healing. Extractions are often needed to treat advanced periodontal disease, remove unsalvageable teeth, or prepare for implants or full-arch restorations. When a graft is required, it can be placed immediately, and sedation options range from nitrous oxide to IV sedation with a dedicated anesthesiologist.

Bone Grafting

Crown lengthening at Sway is one part of a bigger plan: to make sure your crown, veneer, or filling has the best possible foundation. Your goals may be functional or cosmetic; our goal is to make sure your restoration, whatever its purpose, has a long, healthy life. We work closely with your referring dentist, use advanced tools for precision and healing, and take care to preserve the health of your gum and bone tissue at every step. If your dentist has recommended crown lengthening, schedule a consultation with Sway today to learn how we can help complete your treatment plan.

Tooth Extraction & Bone Graft Frequently asked questions:

What to eat after tooth extraction and bone graft?
Stick to soft, easy-to-chew foods for the first several days. Good choices include mashed potatoes, yogurt, smoothies (without a straw), scrambled eggs, and soft pasta. Avoid anything hot, spicy, crunchy, or sticky. Eating soft foods helps protect the graft and surgical site while your body begins to heal.
How long does a tooth extraction and bone graft take?
The procedure typically takes about 45-90 minutes, depending on the tooth and complexity of the graft. At Sway Dental, we use minimally invasive techniques and Bio PRF to support healing and keep the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
How long should a tooth extraction and bone graft hurt?
Some soreness is expected and can last up to 14 days, especially if the graft was large or placed in an area with complex anatomy. Most discomfort peaks in the first few days, but some patients experience lingering pain or pressure for a week or two, even with over-the-counter medication. That’s not unusual, and doesn’t necessarily mean anything is wrong.

At Sway Dental, we use Bio PRF to ease inflammation and support healing, and most of our patients begin to feel much better within 48 hours thanks to this. If pain increases suddenly or seems severe, we’re always here to check in and make sure everything is healing properly.
Can I exercise after tooth extraction and bone graft?
You should avoid all strenuous activity for the first 48-72 hours after surgery. This helps prevent bleeding, swelling, or disturbing the bone graft. Light walking is fine during this time.

After that, you can gradually resume gentle activity, but wait at least 7 days before returning to full workouts, especially anything high-impact or intense. Healing times vary depending on the graft and your overall health, so we’ll give you personalized guidance at your follow-up.
