Gum Recession Treatment in Cranford, NJ

Gum recession treatment at Sway Dental & Facial Esthetics is focused on comfort, regeneration, and long-term support. Using the Pinhole Surgical Technique™ and a collagen matrix graft, Dr. Kang can reposition your existing gum tissue without cutting, sutures, or a second surgical site. It’s a gentler alternative to conventional grafting, designed to help you heal quickly and regain gum tissue volume.

What is Gum Recession?

Gum recession occurs when the tissue around your teeth pulls away, exposing the normally covered root surface. This can make teeth appear longer, cause hot/cold sensitivity, and increase the risk of decay or damage along the roots. Recession may be caused by aggressive brushing, periodontal disease, teeth grinding, orthodontic treatment, or naturally thin gum tissue. Left untreated, recession can worsen over time, eventually threatening the health and stability of the affected teeth.

Single vs. The Conventional Approach: Gum GraftingMultiple Dental Implants

In a conventional gum graft, tissue is harvested from the roof of your mouth and then surgically sutured beneath the gum tissue in the area of recession, which must also be cut, to restore coverage and thickness. While this method is very effective, it requires two surgical sites, cutting and stitching, and often results in a good deal of discomfort, plus a longer recovery time.

A Regenerative Alternative:
The Pinhole Surgical Technique™

At Sway Dental, we use the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST) as a gentler, more modern way to treat gum recession. Instead of cutting or grafting, Dr. Kang uses a small specialized instrument to create a tiny entry point in the gum above the tooth or teeth. Through this pinhole, he gently loosens and repositions the existing gum tissue to cover the exposed root.

To support the repositioned gum and stimulate regeneration, Dr. Kang places a collagen matrix graft made of biocompatible material designed to stabilize the tissue and promote long-term attachment. This helps thicken the gum and reduce the risk of future recession, all without needing to take palate tissue. Gum grafting is a widely respected technique and has been the go-to gum recession treatment since the 1960s; but the Pinhole Technique works exceedingly well for the vast majority of cases, and it’s easier on patients by orders of magnitude. Benefits include:

  • No incisions or sutures.
  • Little to no post-op pain or swelling
  • Faster healing and minimal downtime
  • Strong cosmetic and functional results

gum recession: Frequently Asked Questions

Can gum recession be reversed?
Recessed gum tissue doesn’t grow back on its own, but it can be effectively reversed with the right treatment. Techniques like the Pinhole Surgical Technique allow us to reposition your existing gum tissue over the exposed root surface, restoring natural coverage without incisions or sutures. While you can’t get back lost gum tissue without intervention, we can repair it and help prevent it from returning.
Is gum recession normal?
Mild gum recession is fairly common, especially as we age, but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored. Even small areas of recession can lead to sensitivity, root damage, or cosmetic concerns over time. If you notice your teeth looking longer or your gums pulling away, it’s worth having it evaluated. The earlier we address it, the easier it is to treat and prevent further loss.
Does flossing cause gum recession?
Not when done correctly. In fact, daily flossing helps prevent gum recession by reducing plaque and inflammation along the gumline. However, if you floss too aggressively or snap the floss down hard between your teeth, you can irritate or damage the gums over time. If you’re unsure whether you’re flossing properly, we’re happy to show you a gentler, more effective technique.
Can gum recession come back after treatment?
It can, especially if the underlying cause isn’t addressed. That’s why we focus on long-term support and gum stability when planning your care.
How long does the Pinhole Technique last?
When performed well and paired with good oral habits, gum recession treatment can be one-and-done. Dr. Kang uses regenerative materials like collagen to help strengthen and stabilize the tissue over time.
Can I treat recession on multiple teeth at once?
Yes. One of the advantages of the Pinhole Surgical Technique is that it allows Dr. Kang to treat multiple teeth in a single visit, often without increasing recovery time, and remarkably with as little as one pinhole. Dr. Kang can treat multiple quadrants in one visit, too.
