What is Crown Lengthening?

Crown lengthening at Sway Dental & Facial Esthetics is a precision-driven procedure that exposes more of a tooth’s natural structure by reshaping the gum and, when needed, the underlying bone. This creates the necessary space for a healthy, lasting restoration—usually veneers or a crown. You may need crown lengthening prior to restoration for several reasons:

  • A cavity or fracture extends below the gumline, making it difficult to properly seal a crown.

  • There isn’t enough visible tooth structure to securely hold a crown in place.

  • Your teeth are too short to accommodate veneers, often due to excess gum coverage.

  • You need to ensure that crowns or veneers won’t impinge on the bone or gum attachment, or biologic width, which could lead to chronic inflammation and eventual restoration failure.

By uncovering stable, healthy tooth structure, this procedure helps set the stage for restorations that look good and last!

How Crown Lengthening Works at Sway Dental

At Sway Dental, every crown lengthening procedure is digitally co-planned with your restorative dentist and lab. Dr. Kang uses precise imaging and modeling to ensure that the surgical outcome aligns with the final restoration so that everything fits and functions as it should. The procedure typically includes:

  • Laser contouring of the gum tissue using the Fotona LightWalker® for highly controlled, suture-free adjustments.
  • Bone reshaping if/as needed to maintain proper biologic width and prevent tissue rebound.
  • Detailed coordination with your broader treatment plan to protect long-term stability and esthetics.

The result is a clean and extremely precise foundation for your crown or veneers.

A Foundation That Sets Your Restoration Up for Success

crown lengthening: Frequently Asked Questions

Is crown lengthening painful?
Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the experience is. The procedure is done with local anesthesia, so you won’t feel pain during the treatment itself. Afterward, you may have some mild soreness or swelling for a few days, but it’s usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers. We also offer a variety of sedation options if dental anxiety is getting the best of you.
Will crown lengthening for veneers expose my roots?
It can. Veneers only cover the front of your teeth, so if crown lengthening is done to expose more enamel, some root surface on the back may remain exposed permanently, especially if bone is reshaped around the tooth. This doesn't affect how the veneer looks, but it can cause mild sensitivity or increase the risk of staining. We’ll guide you on how to protect those areas and keep everything healthy.
Will reshaping the bone around my tooth make it weaker?
No. Crown lengthening only reshapes a small amount of bone at the top of the socket, just enough to create space for healthy gum and restoration margins. The tooth remains fully anchored by the deeper bone and ligament, so it stays strong and stable after the procedure.
